In the Sala del Capitano of the Visconti-Venetian Fortress in Lonato del Garda, we designed the exhibition “Mario Giacomelli, a retrospective.” The works on display are 81 black-and-white photographs, part of a donation from the artist himself to the municipality of Lonato. The exhibition was curated by Filippo Maggia with the collaboration of the Mario Giacomelli Archive and was organized by the city administration with the Ugo Da Como Foundation.

The exhibition develops on panels covered in light gray fabric placed in front of the window alcoves. This made it possible to create new vertical display surfaces inside the hall. The panels also have the function of blocking outside light to allow controlled artificial lighting suitable for the type of works on display.
The visitors’ path is organized in series, collections of shots with a common theme conceived by the photographer himself. Each panel houses a series, making it easier for users to follow the exhibition.

We also worked on the graphics inside the exhibition and the signage displayed around the Fortress complex. We utilized a few details of the most famous shots, enlarged and cropped for greater visual impact, for the communication of the exhibition. The exhibition panels with the series names and photo captions, on the other hand, are more rigorous and essential, complementing the bold black and white of Giacomelli’s shots.
