VELÁZQUEZ FOR CERUTI
Fondazione Brescia Musei
Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Brescia
Within the context of Fondazione Brescia Musei’s artwork exchange program PTM Andata e Ritorno we designed a special set-up to exhibit “The Lunch” by Diego Velázquez, an important loan from the Ermitage. Inside the Tosio Martinengo picture gallery room dedicated to Giacomo Ceruti, the painting is able to converse with its surroundings also thanks to the display it is exhibited on.
The custom made panel uses the same tone of dark green as the velvet walls creating an effect of continuity within the room. The light coming from the back of the panel traces two soft vertical lines which highlight its presence. The proportions and dimensions of the set-up are designed to obtain a visual effect of consonance and symmetry with the rest of the room. The painting is located inside a shallow indent which creates a backdrop of smooth shadows around the golden picture frame, empahasizing its brightness.
